The new banner for Trinity, Winkler

This is my most recent creation; a new banner for Trinity Lutheran. The phrase “Trinity in Unity” is derived from the Athanasian Creed, and the overall design is to convey the idea that the unity Trinity has as a congregation is from the Word and the Lutheran Confessions, which point us to Christ alone.  We first used it in church on Trinity Sunday, and I figured it might also work well for Reformation Sunday.  Anyway, it’s colorful enough to fit just about any season…

Gorgeous! Would you mind explaining to me how you did it? I’m thinking about making a small stained-glass quilted banner for my husband as an Ordination gift.

Thanks. Since I can’t sew, I made this banner by cut-and-paste, basically. Another woman from our church hemmed it for me on her machine. I’d collected bits of batik dyed cotton for awhile, and planned the design based on which colors I had in my palette. So it’s on a plain black cotton background, and since I didn’t have a template (other than a Photoshop mock-up I’d done), I started in the center with the Luther’s rose and worked my way outward, adjusting my design accordingly. The white letters are stiff felt, since I didn’t want to use flimsy, fraying fabric for things that detailed. The details on the rose were drawn on with black Sharpie!

Since there’s no template and I was assembling it in this “wild” fashion, you’ll notice a few inconsistencies, like the fact that my cross “lists” a bit to the left at the bottom. I didn’t bother using a straight edge to keep everything perfectly lined up.

Wow! (Or as the gal on the television ad might say, “All I can say is Sham wow!”)

This is beautiful and stunning. Do you do commission work?

Yes, I do commissions. Mostly paintings, though. This is the first banner I’ve ever made, and since it’s cut-and-paste, it’s not really the standard sort of thing that would probably be ordered from someone looking for a banner!
